Anchors Aweigh

The tale of Arthur and the Red Dragon will delight People’s Light & Theatre audiences this November 19 through January 11th, 2015. On November 18that 7pm, the actors took the stage for the dress rehearsal. Their audience? The students of General Wayne Elementary School who have gotten to know the people of People’s Light since they began working together in September.

The Anchors Aweigh! Program is a partnership between People’s Light & Theatre and GVSD that gives students with and without disabilities the opportunity to work together and build social and learning skills. Actors from People’s Light have been meeting with the students regularly since September, and will continue through April. The students have learned about the story of Arthur and the Red Dragon, and completed activities together relating to the story. On November 18th the students, along with their families and friends, were treated to their own showing of the performance at the dress rehearsal.

After the performance, the students joined a few of the actors on-stage to “give advice” to Arthur. Each student proudly told Arthur their own words of wisdom before the entire group gave a short performance as the Arthur cast sang.

Susan McKey, People’s Light Actor and Teaching Artist, said that in the coming weeks they will introduce the students to puppetry.

The Foundation at Great Valley is pleased to support the Anchors Aweigh! Program, and the invaluable experience it gives to our GVSD students.
